More than four million study results have been migrated from the old system Studieweb. Now that all the study results are available in SIS, you are able to view your study progress in your academic plan and, where applicable, apply for your degree certificate and look at your (binding) study advice.

Sustainable 'dual boot’ computer room for science students opened

On Friday, 7 October 2011, the first ‘dual boot’ computer room was opened at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Science students can now choose which operating system they want to use for their practicals.

Longer opening hours libraries and study centres 15 - 28 October

From Saturday 15 October to Friday 28 October libraries and study centres will have longer opening hours due to the exam period.

Additional consultation hour for students with dyslexia

Student counsellors will give information about the possibilities, facilities and arrangements for students with dyslexia during an additional consultation hour from September to November 2011 on Monday at 16.00 or 16.30.

USC UvA/HvA team braves rain in Dam tot Damloop

Hundreds of students and staff from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA) braved the rain to run the 16 kilometres from Amsterdam to Zaandam as part of the USC UvA/HvA team.

UvA Start Magazine: students opt for print

Reading Room in the book repository IWO is open again

The reading room at the UBA book repository IWO, located in the southeastern part of Amsterdam, has been redecorated and is now available for everyone.

Young scientists with a PhD degree are invited to submit an original research proposal for the Creative Mind Prize 2011 ('Creatieve Geest Prijs 2011').

A large number of the scheduled examinations in building A, taking place from 8 August to 4 September, have been moved to other locations as a result of construction activities.

Building Update #4

The following building works are scheduled to take place on Roeterseiland in the near future.

Construction temporary bridge and demolition garages Roeterseiland

In August, a temporary bridge will be built over the existing pedestrian bridge over the canal. In addition, the garages next to the future CREA will be demolished.

‘QS World University Rankings by Subject’: UvA 5 times best in the Netherlands

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) has the highest ranking of all Dutch universities in five fields of study according to the global QS World University Rankings by Subject, which were published on Tuesday, 5 July.

President Executive Board UvA/HvA resigns from position

Karel van der Toorn, president of the Executive Board (CvB) of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HvA), has decided after consultation with the Supervisory Board to resign from his position effective immediately.

From Monday, 20 June 2011, the first faculties will start with course registration through SIS, the new student information system of the UvA.

Student email via Google Apps for Education as of 2011-2012 academic year

The UvA student email will be provided by Google Apps for Education as of the new 2011-2012 academic year. This has been decided upon by the Executive Board.

Law student Sander Wirken wins UvA Thesis Competition 2011

Law student Sander Wirken has won the UvA Thesis Competition 2011. He was presented with this special distinction during the University Day on Saturday, 28 May. Medical student Soemirien Kasanmoentalib came second. Third place was shared by Peter Bloem (Artificial Intelligence) and Ammeke Kateman (History).

Reading room UBA Book Depot IWO closed in June and July

This summer the reading room of the UBA Book Depot IWO in Amsterdam Zuidoost will be renovated. Therefore it will be closed to the public during June and July.

Singel stacks move to IWO book depot, please allow for longer delivery times

Do you need books or journals from the UB Singel closed stacks this summer? Please, allow for longer delivery periods. From June onwards the collections shelved in the Singel depots will be transferred to IWO, UB’s Bijlmermeer book depot.

Entrance policy Bushuis study centre changed during exam period

During the exam period from 14 May to 20 June, the Bushuis study centre on the Kloveniersburgwal will (just like the UB) only be open for students and employees of the University of Amsterdam and Hogeschool van Amsterdam. Entrance is only possible on presentation of a valid student ID card with a photo.

Over the course of the last year, the Facilities Centre has been busy with the call for tenders of the UvA and HvA catering. New contracts have now been signed for the coffee corners and for the coffee and snack machines. These contracts will come into effect as of 3 June 2011.

Five finalists compete for the Science Park New Ideas Competition 2011

On Tuesday, 17 May, the winner of the sixth edition of the Science Park New Competition will be announced during a special ceremony. Students and researchers from the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, University of Applied Sciences (HVA) and institutions and companies based at the Science Park were asked to submit an original, innovative and feasible idea.

UvA lodges appeal in legal case surrounding new UB at Binnengasthuisterrein

The University of Amsterdam will lodge an appeal with the Council of State against the ruling made by the Amsterdam District Court on 30 March regarding construction of a new University Library (UB) and study centre for the Faculty of Humanities at the Binnengasthuisterrein (BG-terrein).

Different opening times for libraries and study centres during upcoming public holidays

UvA libraries and study centres will have different opening times in connection with the period between the Queen's Day and Liberation Day public holidays on 30 April and 5 May respectively.

UvA Essay Competition 2011: The University in the City

New summer courses in Crea

The summer courses will start in July at Crea. Students can enrol for the period from 4 July to 19 August. There will be a new course this year: Zomerprojecten (Summer Projects).

Construction work building D Roeterseiland delayed

The construction work in building D has been temporarily suspended as additional asbestos has been found. This will affect when the building work is completed.

Court upholds appeal against demolition at BG-terrein

The Amsterdam District Court has upheld the appeal that opponents had lodged against the listed building permit granted by Amsterdam city council for the construction of the new library at the Binnengasthuisterrein (BG-terrein).

Crooks active via UvA mail

The UvA would like to draw students and staff members’ attention to a spam email that is circulating offering a job. Do not under any circumstance send your personal information and bank account numbers, as this is a scam.
