The Media Centre of the UvA

The Media Library is a centre for independent study available to UvA students and alumni of language courses or humanities departments (such as history).

Front Desk

The Front Desk is both for the Media Centre and the IC Study Centre, which is also on the ground floor, opposite the Media Centre.

Use of the Media Centre

Facilities and collection are available for anyone in possession of a valid UvAnetID.

Collection

We have a very large amount of courses for learning languages and diagnostic tests which come in the form of books, CD-Roms, DVD's, audio files and programs on the network.

There is a large collection of foreign language films for practicing your listening skills or for special teaching projects.

Languages and subjects

Our collection includes many languages like Spanish, English, Italian, French, Dutch sign language, Hebrew, Arabic and other disciplines like History, Musicology, and European Studies.

Language lab

There are two computer rooms available for practicing speaking and listening skills by means of audio files, CD-Roms and programs on the network.

A projector with a screen is available in room 005. Teachers can book this room via their ‘opleidingscoördinator'.

Wireless

There is a wireless connection and several power-points for laptops.

Borrowing items

You can borrow our material only for use within the Media Centre itself.  Only teachers of FGw are allowed to take items out of the Media Centre.

Dvd-players & satellite television

There is also a room for watching feature films, documentaries and television broadcasts from other countries (via satellite).

Printing jobs

You can send printing jobs from the computer rooms of the Media Centre to the printers in the IC Study Centre, which is also on the ground floor, opposite the Media Centre.

You can pay for them by ChipKnip. If you do not have a ChipKnip on your bankcard, you can buy prepaid ChipKnip cards in the University Library building at the Singel.

Audiovisual assignments

For teachers within the FGw it is possible to ask e.g. for the duplication of DVD's of for recording television broadcasts. Theachers can fill in a request form at the Front Desk.

Television recordings can be made for FGw teachers/employees (upon request)

  • The Uitzending gemist (missed programmes) service for the stations Nederland 1, 2 and 3, which can be re-recorded up to 10 days after the programme went to air.
  • Television channels in the Media Centre. Recordings can also be made via the many channels that are available within the Media Centre.
  • Digital television with around 90 channels. These are not available for viewing in the Media Centre, but recordings are possible.
