Internships for international students

internships

General information

Fee paying international students can do an internship during their Bachelor's or Master's programme. They may also do an internship during the Erasmus Exchange programme.
An internship is optional and can be done instead of an elective or a tutorial.

The Faculty's Internship Office can help you to get started, but you will have to find a suitable placement yourself. We strongly advise you to make an appointment with the Internship Office before you start looking.

There is no guarantee that you will find a suitable placement. Not all fields and organizations are willing to accept foreign students as interns. A working knowledge of the Dutch language is helpful.

Credits

Optional internships generally have a value of 10 ECTS (280 hrs.). From September 2012 onwards this will change to 12 ECTS (336 hrs), which means 8,6 weeks for a full-time internship.

Professional Masters' programmes

Professional Masters' programmes have their own network and contacts. Placements are found and offered by the Internship coordinators of professional Masters' programmes.

Non-EU students

Students from non-EU countries are obliged to draw up a contract between the employer, the intern and the department. The employer keeps this contract plus a copy of the student's passport. This is compulsory. Sample contracts are available at the Internship Office.

Exchange students

You may do an internship during your exchange programme. Please contact the Internship Office for more information.

If you want your internship to be acknowledged by your own university, please take notice of the requirements and procedure of your university beforehand.

Requirements

Good working knowledge and/or fluency in English is a basic requirement. Fluency in Dutch is an asset.

When you have found a placement a contract must be drawn up between the intern, the internship organization and the department/faculty. Sample contracts are available at the Internship Office.

Fees and scholarships

There are no fixed regulations for internship fees. Some organizations pay a (small) fee whereas others do not pay anything at all.

Regular students may apply for scholarships for internships abroad (outside the Netherlands) such as the Erasmus internship scholarship.
