Incorporate the internships in your studyprogramme
What are the advantages of incorporating the internship in my studyprogramme?
- If an internship is combined with your thesis, the name of the company is mentioned on your diploma.
- A professor of the university is your supervisor and will coach you during the internship.
- If the internship is incorporated in your studyprogramme, the trainee agreement needed, will be signed by the Internship Office.
Is it possible to do an internship without incorporating it in my studyprogramme?
You can do an internship any time you like. Doing an internship will always increase your personal development and professional experience.
! But please notice that rules concerning work permits might apply in this situation. The Internship Office is not allowed to sign the trainee agreement in this case. That is only possible if the internship is incorporated in the studyprogramme!

General information concerning the Internship Office
What does the Internship Office do?
The Internship Office:
- Provides information and related services on internships
- Maintains relationships with employers and Faculty staff
- Assists you with writing your CV/motivation letter and preparing for job interviews
- Assists employers in applying for a work permit
- Assists in requesting grants from the UvA for international internships
Why do I need to register with the Internship Office?
- Students who want to incorporate the internship in their studyprogramme need to register in order to either receive credits (elective internship) or have the internship mentioned on their transcript (thesis internship).
- When you are registered at the Internship Office, you will receive the internship newsletter every other month.
Where can I hand in the documents needed for the internship (such as the internship plan, internship report and evaluation form)?
There are different options:
- You can hand it in during the open office hour of the Internship Office;
- You can hand it in at the Student Desk;
- You can send it by e-mail to the Internship Office. Please note that the documents must be scanned including all the needed signatures.
I am writing my internship plan, but I realise that the goal and or focus of the internship might change once I have started. Can I hand in my plan after I have started?
No, that is not possible. We know these situations may occur. Please write the internship plan before you start the internship with the information that is available at that moment. Mention the fact that the content might change after starting the internship in the plan. Have the plan signed and hand it in at the Internship Office before your start the internship. Once you have started the internship you can rewrite the plan and hand it in again or mention the changes in the report that you will write and submit afterwards.
Internship vacancies on the website of the Internship Office
Does the Internship Office function as a recruitment office and will it select my CV and send it to the company?
The Internship Office does not function as a recruitment office. We are approached by companies who want to offer internships. We put the internships on our website, but students have to contact the companies themselves.
Finding a supervisor and/or a topic for the internship/thesis
I would like to do an internship but I don't have any idea what kind of research might be interesting.
- Please take a look at ‘available internships' and ‘links' on this site to have an idea of what kind of research possibilities are offered on the market.
- Contact the internship coordinator at the FEB who is specialised in the field of your interest/internship. It is important that you have seriously been looking for an internship and thinking about what kind of research you would like to do before you contact the coordinator. The list with internship coordinators can be found at What to arrange in advance (scroll to FEB supervisor).
I want to do an internship but I would like to know if the rough idea I have in mind is a suitable basis for research.
Contact the internship coordinator at the FEB who is specialised in the field of your interest/internship. He/she will help you or refer you to another professor. The list with internship coordinators can be found at What to arrange in advance (scroll to FEB supervisor).
I have found an interesting internship, but I don't know if the level is sufficient and/or the research meets academic standards.
As soon as you are negotiating the possibility of an internship with a company you should contact a FEB professor to request supervision. In your first contact you can discuss the content of the internship. The professor will decide whether this meets the required academic standards. Contact the internship coordinator who is specialised in the field of your interest/internship if you don't have a supervisor yet and don't know who you should approach. The list with internship coordinators can be found at What to arrange in advance (scroll to FEB supervisor).
If I contact an internship coordinator who is specialised in a certain field, how can this person assist me?
- The coordinator can discuss interesting research areas with you and go over any rough ideas you might have;
- When you don't know which supervisor you wish to approach, the internship coordinator of your specialisation can refer you to the designated professor.
Work permit/trainee agreement
Do I need a work permit or a trainee agreement?
Whether you need a work permit or a trainee agreement depends on several things like your nationality, whether the internship is incorporated in your study programme or not, etc. Please take a look at the Nuffic website: to see what is applicable to your situation. Please note that if you need a trainee agreement, the Internship Office FEB can only sign it when the internship is incorporated in your study programme.
I found out I need a work permit in order to be able to do an internship. What can the Internship Office do for me?
The Internship Office FEB can draft a recommendation letter that is applicable to your situation.
Students outside the FEB/UvA
I am a student of another Faculty/University. Can I also apply for the internships that are offered on your website?
Yes, that is possible.
I am a student of another Faculty/University. Is it also possible for me to do an internship as an elective and earn credits for it?
This depends on the rules of your own Faculty/University. Contact your own student counselors or board of Examiners to verify what the possibilities are.
General questions concerning internships
What is a suitable moment during my studies to do an internship?
During the bachelor:
It is possible to combine the internship with your thesis towards the end of your bachelor.
During the Master:
It is possible to combine an internship with your thesis towards the end of your master.
I am looking for an internship. Are there any general requirements that I have to bear in mind?
Yes there are some general requirements. You can read them at Finding an internship (scroll to ‘requirements).
I would like to do an internship. Is it compulsory to do an internship that is offered on your website?
No, that is not compulsory. You are free to choose any internship you like, no matter how or where you found it. It is important though, that the internship is approved by your supervisor.
Can I get a grant/scholarship while I'm doing an internship abroad?
In many cases it is possible to receive a grant while doing an internship abroad. The conditions of the two grants we offer -Erasmus scholarship and a Stunt grant are described at Scholarships/Grants. It might be possible to find other grants by approaching organisations you find e.g. via the internet.
What is a reasonable reimbursement amount for a fulltime internship?
The reimbursement amount that is offered varies a great deal. A reasonable reimbursement amount is between 300 and 600 euros on a fulltime basis.
Is it possible to do my internship on a part-time basis?
Yes, this is possible. The duration of the internship demanded by the Faculty is expressed in number of hours, see also our website Rules, Registrations and Forms for Bachelor's and Master's Thesis and Interships at the FEB 2011-2012. Open the document that is applicable to your situation, either the bachelor or the master document. This means that you can decide whether you will do the internship on a full time or a part time basis. Companies however, might also have a preference - discuss your own preference with the preferences of the employer, even if they have indicated this in the advertisement.
