How to apply for your degree?
Please mind the deadlines!
Please note that there are strict deadlines regarding graduation. Preceeding graduation, a preliminary degree application has to be filed with the Student Desk: this procedure should be initiated directly after you have taken your last exam, or handed in the final version of your thesis.
Most International students are likely to graduate in August. Please note taht the preliminary application needs to be filed before August 1st, the grade of your thesis must be registered in SIS before August 25th and the formal diploma application must be completed before August 25th as well!
| Failing to meet these deadlines entails that one is obliged to register as a student in the next academic year and pay tuition! |
Please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Graduation assessment
Deadline: see the application schedule
When applying for your diploma, it needs to be assessed whether you have fulfilled all requirements for graduation. You must ask the Student Desk to do this assessment right before you are about to take your last exams and/or give in a final version of your thesis, even if you don't have the results yet.
To be able to do this assessment, the Student Desk needs you to fill in the graduation form, which can be found under the link below. Make sure you fill out the whole form completely.
This file should be sent by mail or handed in person at the Student Desk.
Please note: incomplete files will not be considered!

Step 2: Result Graduation assessment
After you have received all your grades, but no earlier than 10 days after handing in the graduation form, you can contact the Student Desk for the results by phone: +31 20 525 3440 (preferred), or by email: studentdesk-law@uva.nl
If you meet the necessary graduation criteria, you can immediately apply for your degree, see step 3.
However, if it is concluded that you have not yet fulfilled all graduation requirements, you can not apply for the degree until these have been met.
Step 3: Official degree application
Deadline: see the application schedule
Once all the grades are registered and once the Student Desk has positively assessed your graduation request, you can apply for your diploma. The official diploma application is only done upon your specific request. This can be done in person at the Student Desk or by telephone (+31 20 525 3440).
If you encounter problems filing the official degree application in time, due to appeal procedures, late exam results or late decisions from the exam committee, you must inform the Registry via the Student Desk before the deadline for application.
During your degree application an official Statement of Graduation will be available upon request. This document proofs that you have met all the requirements for your LLM degree and can be shown to future employers or schools while waiting for your official diploma to be issued.
The date of graduation as shown on this statement as well as on your official diploma is the last day of the month in which you have applied for your diploma,
If you do not graduate in July or August, the graduation date determines a possible restitution of a part of the tuition fee. You need to apply for this restitution as soon as you have applied for your diploma. For more information and forms regarding the restitution you are referred to the Service and Information Center (+31 20 525 8080 or info@uva.nl)
Collecting your degree
You can choose in what manner you would like to receive your degree and academic transcript:
- Participation in the graduation ceremony by the Exam Committee. The special ceremony for international students takes place in October. If you choose to take part in the graduation ceremony you will receive a personal notice with a time and place of the graduation ceremony two weeks prior the ceremony.
- Pick up your degree and transcript at the Student Desk (pay attention to the specified dates)
- If neither of the above are possible for you, please download, fill in and scan the Authorisation Form and send this form by email to the International Office (als-fdr@uva.nl).
