Exam Registration

From exam period August 2009 on

Register in time for each individual exam!

When to register?

In the Academic calender you can find the dates on which you can enlist yourself (see below).

Registration closes exactly one week before the exam date

You must register for each exam separately, retakes included. You need to register online, through SiS . You can register from the date the exam registration is open (dates are published online) until one week prior to the exam.

You can register from any computer with an internet connection, 24 hours per day, from every place in the world.

If you encounter technical or administrative problems you can contact the Student Desk through studentdesk-law@uva.nl. Therefore there is never an excuse not to register in time for your exams! Don't wait until the very last moment. If at moment your computer or internet connection does not work, the Student Desk will not be able to help you in time.

Administration fee for students who forget to register

Post registration for exams is only possible after payment of an administration fee  (assuming that space is available and that you are entitled to take the exam).

The amount of the administrative fee
If a student fails to register in time and needs to post register. This means that various administrative acts need to be done manually instead of automatically. The costs for this are €40,-- per exam per student.

1st exam: € 40
2nd exam: € 10
3 rd exam (and more): € 5 per exam

The fees apply for each individual exam period. A student who forgets to register for one exam in three different exam periods must pay an administration fee of 3 x € 40 = € 120.

There are 4 exam periods a year:

  • October
  • December / January
  • March
  • May / June (/ July)

No exceptions are made!

There is no valid reason why a student doesn't register (free!) for an exam in time. If  administrative or technical problems occur the Student Desk can help with the registration. Personal circumstances (family matters, side jobs, illness etcetera) are not considered valid reason for not registering in time for an exam.

Procedure for post registration

  • The student visits to the Student Desk (open mon-fri from 10-14 hrs) as soon as he or she finds out he is not registered for an exam.
  • The Student Desk checks whether or not the student is entitled to participate in the exam.
  • The student pays the administrative fee at the desk. This can be done only in pin (credit card is not possible).
  • The student gets a receipt of post registration and payment. This receipt needs to be brought to the exam.

Exceptions / appeal

When post registering the student always pays the fee. A student can reclaim the costs in case of one of the following:

  • The student has been at some point registered for the exam. The student needs to prove this with the email confirmation which is sent out after registering.
  • The student encountered technical or administrative problems, and reported those in writing (for instance by e-mail) to the student desk, before the deadline of registering had passed.
  • Due to unforeseen circumstances the student was, for a longer period of time (the entire registration period), physically or mentally not able to register for the exam in time. The student needs to proof this. Only serious conditions (eg hospitalization) are considered a valid reason.

Tips and Tricks on exam registration

  • Opening dates of the exam registration are mentioned in the course catalogue and on the website. Mark these dates in your (digital) calendar.
  • Upon registering for an exam you receive an confirmation email. Hold on to this email until you receive your exam result! If you do not receive an email or if you are not able to show this email you are not registered properly.
  • If you need assistance from the Student Desk with registering for exams, please do not wait until the last moment! Opening hours are mon-fri from 10-14 hrs.
  • Don't wait until the last minute with registering,. If at the last minute your computer breaks down, internet connection is bad or the UvA server is out of business the Student Desk can't assist you. Technical problems are not considered valid reasons for not being registered for an exam.
  • Assume you need to register for every exam, including retakes, oral exams and sometimes even essays. Look at the information on the exam schedule for this, and when in doubt, contact the Student Desk!
