1) The lecturer stimulates the transfer and application of knowledge

The lecturer is capable of transferring his/her knowledge of the relevant field of study in a memorable manner so that the information is retained by his/her students. As a result, students are able to reproduce and apply this knowledge with ease during the remainder of their studies.

2) The lecturer effectively combines research and teaching

Research and teaching complement one another. The study programme exposes students to academic research and teaches them the basic principles needed to conduct research. The lecturer applies scientific research to his/her teaching and has the capacity to be inspired by students' findings.

3) The lecturer inspires and has a passion for his/her field

The lecturer has a passion for his/her field and is able to instil this passion in his/her students. The lecturer inspires students and generates enthusiasm for the academic discipline.

4) The lecturer provides useful feedback

The lecturer provides students with effective and useful feedback on their work and performance, both orally and in writing. The lecturer, in turn, is open to feedback from students with regard to his/her approach and teaching.

5) The lecturer stimulates students to take individual responsibility

The lecturer takes the interests of individual students into account. Rather than explaining in detail how every task should be performed, he/she poses critical questions so that the student gains an understanding of his/her own process of knowledge acquisition. As a result, the student learns to make independent choices.

6) The lecturer puts time into the supervision and guidance of students

The lecturer is easily approachable and takes the time to help offer students guidance with regard to assignments, essays, research and theses. He or she is open to personal contact with students.

7) The lecturer utilises inspiring material

The lecturer uses study material and innovative teaching methods that dovetail with the academic discipline, as well as inspiring and challenging the student to delve deeper into the field of study.

The lecturer sets exams which correspond with the teaching

It should be clear to the student what is expected of him or her with regard to tests or exams. The form and content of tests should correspond with the teaching and course literature. The examination level should be in keeping with the teaching and also challenge the student.
