GSSS Fieldwork Subsidy, procedures and form

The information below about the GSSS Fieldwork subsidy applies to students who leave for fieldwork abroad as of September 2011. Please note that procedures and amounts might differ in 2012-2013

Students in the Master programme Cultural and Social  Anthropology, both the Dutch and English taught programme, will receive a Fieldwork Subsidy from the GSSS after having submitted a complete Fieldwork Subsidy application. The total amount of the GSSS fieldwork subsidy ranges from €200 to €650, and must be seen as a contribution to travelcosts and accommodation.

The maximum allowance of the GSSS fieldwork subsidy depends on the region where you conduct your fieldwork and the time spent abroad. Based on the budget enclosed with you application an advance of 80% of the maximum amount will be transferred to your bank account before the start of the fieldwork (on condition that you submit a complete application at least 6 weeks before leaving).

After returning a final calculation based on orignal travel tickets and receipts for accommodation will be carried out, after which you will receive the remaining 20 % (the exact amount depending on the receipts and the maximum amount applicable in your case). The Fieldwork Subsidy is separate from any other scholarships, like the STUNT scholarship, and needs to be applied for separately.

Requirements of the GSSS fieldwork subsidy:

  • The student conducts the fieldwork outside The Netherlands
  • The student is registered as a full-time studen tin the UvA programme, during both the fieldwork period and the thesis writing period
  • The fieldwork needs to be approved of by the academic advisor.
  • You must have a health insurance valid in the country of destination.
  • You must have finished all your first semester courses.
  • You will have to finish writing your thesis within the nominal period of your study programme after returning from the field. If, for good reasons, you are not able to finish your thesis within this timespan, you have to write a request to the examinations committee for an extention. If, without any reason, you are not able to finish your thesis on time the GSSS is entitled to reclaim the fieldwork subsidy (see also the thesis contract).
  • The GSSS is also entitled to reclaim the fieldwork subsidy in case of too late or unjust declarations after the fieldwork has been conducted
  • Only complete applications will be processed
