Student rooms
The UvA rents rooms from housing corporations De Key and DUWO.
The Short Stay offices offer the following types of accommodation:
- single rooms with private facilities (kitchen, bathroom),
- single rooms with shared facilities (kitchen, bathroom),
- shared rooms, in which one living space is shared between two students (of the same gender),
A shared room means you live in one room together with another student. In most shared rooms the kitchen is situated in the room itself, and there is no other common room available. Living in a shared room is a great way to make a new friend. Getting to know one another and setting some ground rules is the starting point of making your stay in a shared room a good experience. It is the cheapest type of accommodation available in the centre of Amsterdam.
You can find photos and prices on the following websites.
International students in Dutch student buildings
Most international student rooms are situated in buildings or on floors with only international students. However, some are located on floors where the majority of tenants is Dutch. The benefits of living on a floor with Dutch students include the opportunity to make Dutch friends, a first-hand introduction to Dutch student culture in Amsterdam and the opportunity to improve your Dutch language skills. However, please keep in mind that if you are assigned a room on such a floor, you will be expected to comply with existing house rules (about cleaning the common spaces, etc.). Although many Dutch students speak English well, the main language on these mixed floors will be Dutch.
